What is Bondo and what is it actually used for?
Bondo is a family of two-part polyester fillers and one-part putties used to repair, rebuild and resurface damaged materials. The original Bondo Body Filler is the industry standard for auto body dent repair, but the Bondo family also includes Bondo Wood Filler for rotted wood, Bondo Fiberglass Resin for boats and structural repairs, Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty for fine finishing, and Bondo All Purpose Putty for multi-surface jobs.
How long does Bondo take to dry and harden?
Bondo Body Filler typically begins to set within 5 minutes of mixing with the cream hardener and is ready to sand in roughly 15 to 25 minutes at room temperature. Bondo Wood Filler follows a similar curing window. Always check the label on your specific Bondo product for exact set times, and remember that cold temperatures slow the cure while warm temperatures speed it up.
Can Bondo be used on wood, or only on cars?
Bondo makes a dedicated wood product — Bondo Wood Filler — that is engineered specifically for rotted, damaged or missing wood. It bonds permanently, accepts stain and paint, and holds nails and screws. For wood repair, always use Bondo Wood Filler or Bondo All Purpose Putty rather than the automotive body filler, since the formulas are tuned for very different substrates.
Do I need Bondo hardener, and how much do I use?
Yes — Bondo Body Filler and Bondo Wood Filler are two-part products that require the included cream hardener to cure. The standard ratio is roughly a golf-ball-sized scoop of filler to a 1.5 to 2 inch ribbon of Bondo Cream Hardener. Mix until the color is uniform with no streaks. Too little hardener and it won’t cure; too much can lead to a brittle repair.
Can I paint over Bondo, and does Bondo need primer?
Bondo is built to be painted. After the filler has cured and been sanded smooth, you should apply a quality primer before topcoat — Bondo itself is porous, so primer seals the surface and gives the paint a uniform base. For automotive repairs, follow with the appropriate basecoat and clearcoat. For wood, Bondo Wood Filler also accepts stain in addition to paint.
What’s the difference between Bondo Body Filler and Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty?
Bondo Body Filler is the heavy lifter — a two-part filler used to rebuild dents, gouges and large damaged areas. Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty is a one-part finishing putty designed for the final pass: pinholes, sand scratches and minor imperfections after the body filler has been shaped. They’re meant to work together, not replace each other.
Will Bondo work on plastic bumpers and flexible parts?
For flexible plastic parts, use the Bondo Bumper Repair Kit or Bondo Bumper and Flexible Part Repair — these are formulated to flex with the substrate so the repair doesn’t crack. Standard Bondo Body Filler is engineered for rigid metal panels and is too brittle for flexible plastic on its own.
