Two-Part Polyester Formula & Application

Our auto bondo uses a proven polyester resin system that cures through chemical reaction, not air exposure. You’ll mix the tan-colored filler with the included red hardener at a ratio of 50:1 by volume — roughly a golf-ball-sized amount of filler to a 1-inch ribbon of hardener.

The working time varies with temperature: expect 3-5 minutes at 77°F, longer in cold weather, and faster in heat. Apply with a plastic spreader in thin layers, building up deep repairs gradually. The filler turns from pink to cream as the hardener blends fully, signaling it’s ready to apply.

Surface Preparation & Compatibility
Sizing & fit

Surface Preparation & Compatibility

Bondo bonds best to clean, dry, abraded surfaces. Remove all paint, rust, grease, and wax with 80-grit sandpaper or a grinding disc, exposing bare metal or fiberglass. Wipe the area with acetone or lacquer thinner to remove residue, then let it dry completely.

The filler adheres permanently to steel, aluminum, galvanized metal, fiberglass, SMC plastic, and wood. It does not bond to flexible plastics like bumper covers — use our specialized flexible filler for those repairs. For rust-through holes larger than a quarter, install a backing patch of fiberglass mesh or perforated metal before applying the body filler.

Styling

Sanding, Shaping & Finishing

Once the filler has cured hard enough to resist your thumbnail (15-30 minutes), rough-shape it with 36-grit or 40-grit sandpaper on a long sanding board. The goal is to bring the repair level with the surrounding panel without creating valleys or high spots.

Switch to 80-grit to refine the contour, then finish with 120-grit or 150-grit for final smoothing. Bondo auto body filler sands clean without loading paper or creating dust balls. For large areas, use a dual-action sander; for tight curves, hand-sand with a flexible pad.

“
Fixed my quarter panel rust perfectly
I had a rust-through spot the size of a half-dollar on my '92 Bronco. Patched it with fiberglass mesh, then layered on the Bondo. Sanded smooth in about 20 minutes and it's been rock-solid for two years now. Way easier than I expected.

Sands like butter and holds paint great
I've tried cheaper fillers and they all gum up the sandpaper or shrink after a few months. Bondo stays put and sands clean every time. I primered over it, wet-sanded, and laid down base/clear with zero shrinkage or cracking.

Body shop quality at home
I was quoted $800 to fix a dent in my door. Bought a quart of Bondo for $20 and did it myself in an afternoon. The repair is completely invisible after paint. My neighbor thought I had it done professionally.

Works on fiberglass boats too
Used this to repair a crack in my boat hull and it bonded perfectly. Mixed it thick, pressed it into the crack, and sanded it flush. Glassed over the top for extra strength. Held up through a full season on the lake.

Fast cure time saves me hours
I run a small restoration shop and we go through gallons of this stuff. The 15-minute cure time means I can fill, sand, and prime a fender in under an hour. Consistency is perfect batch after batch.

Great filler but follow the mixing ratio
This is the best body filler I've used, but you have to measure the hardener carefully. Too much and it kicks off in 60 seconds. Too little and it stays soft for an hour. Once I got the ratio right, it's been flawless on three different car projects.

Good to know

Common Questions About Bondo Auto Body Filler

Mix Bondo at a ratio of approximately 50 parts filler to 1 part hardener by volume. For practical measuring, use a golf-ball-sized amount of filler with a 1-inch ribbon of red hardener squeezed across the top. Too much hardener causes the filler to cure in under a minute and can weaken the bond; too little extends working time but delays sanding.

The mixed filler should turn from pink to a uniform cream color with no red streaks. Blend thoroughly with a clean plastic spreader for 30-60 seconds before applying.

Bondo bonds poorly to paint and primer — always remove them down to bare substrate. Sand or grind the repair area with 80-grit sandpaper until you see clean metal, fiberglass, or wood. Wipe with acetone to remove grease and dust, then apply the filler to the bare surface.

Filler applied over paint will appear solid at first but can delaminate weeks or months later, especially in hot weather or under flexing stress.

At 77°F, Bondo auto body filler is sandable in 15-30 minutes and reaches 90% of its final hardness in 1-2 hours. Full chemical cure takes 24 hours, though you can sand, prime, and paint after the first hour with no issues.

Temperature dramatically affects cure speed. Below 60°F, allow 45-60 minutes before sanding. Above 85°F, the filler may cure in 10-15 minutes. For best results, work at 70-80°F and mix smaller batches in hot weather to avoid waste.

Apply Bondo in layers no thicker than 1/4 inch per coat. Thicker applications trap heat during curing, which can cause cracking, pinholes, and incomplete hardening in the center. For deep dents or holes, build up the repair in multiple thin layers, allowing each to cure before adding the next.

If you need to fill a depression deeper than 1/2 inch, use a fiberglass-reinforced filler or install a backing patch first, then finish with standard body filler.

Standard Bondo body filler does not bond to flexible plastics like polypropylene or thermoplastic olefin (TPO) bumper covers. These materials flex during impact, and rigid polyester filler will crack and pop off.

For plastic bumper repairs, use Bondo Bumper Repair or another flexible filler formulated with plasticizers that move with the substrate. Auto bondo is designed for rigid surfaces: metal panels, fiberglass, SMC plastic, and wood.

Press a sheet of wax paper or plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the filler before sealing the lid. This prevents a skin from forming due to air exposure. Store the can in a cool, dry location away from heat sources and sunlight.

Opened Bondo remains usable for 1-2 years if sealed properly. If a thin crust forms on top, scrape it off and discard — the filler underneath is still good. Replace the hardener tube every 12-18 months, as it degrades faster than the resin.

Bondo auto body filler is not a structural adhesive and should never replace welding or metal fabrication on load-bearing components. It's designed to fill cosmetic dents, scratches, and surface imperfections on panels that don't bear weight or stress.

For rust-through holes, cut away the damaged metal, weld in a patch panel or install a fiberglass mesh backing, then use Bondo to smooth and finish the surface. The filler itself does not restore structural integrity — it only provides a smooth surface for paint.
