Bondo All-Purpose Putty
Our All-Purpose Putty delivers professional-grade repairs for wood, metal, and masonry surfaces. Whether you're filling cracks, sealing gaps, or rebuilding damaged edges, this versatile formula bonds tenaciously and sands to a smooth finish.
We engineered this putty for both quick fixes and structural repairs. The thick consistency stays where you apply it, while the advanced polymer blend ensures long-lasting adhesion that won't crack or shrink over time.
Formula & application specs

Formula & Bonding Technology
We formulated Bondo All-Purpose Putty with a proprietary polymer blend that creates molecular bonds with porous and non-porous surfaces alike. Unlike traditional wood fillers that only work on one material, our all-purpose formula penetrates wood grain, adheres to metal oxidation, and locks into masonry pores.
The putty’s thixotropic properties mean it flows under pressure from your knife but holds its shape on vertical surfaces. This gives you complete control whether you’re filling nail holes in trim or rebuilding a rotted windowsill corner.

Application Methods & Surface Preparation
Preparing Your Surface
Clean the repair area of loose debris, dust, and grease before applying Bondo all-purpose putty. For metal surfaces, remove rust with a wire brush and wipe with a degreaser. Wood should be dry with loose fibers removed.
Application Technique
Scoop putty onto a clean putty knife and press firmly into the damaged area. Work in thin layers for gaps deeper than 1/4 inch, allowing each layer to skim-dry before adding the next. Overfill slightly, then scrape flush with surrounding surface.
Sanding & Finishing
Bondo all-purpose putty reaches sandable hardness in approximately 30 minutes at 70°F. Higher humidity or cooler temperatures extend cure time, while heat accelerates it. Test readiness by scratching an inconspicuous edge—the putty should powder rather than gum your sandpaper.
Start with 80-grit sandpaper to level high spots, then progress through 120-grit and 180-grit for a smooth finish. The cured putty sands easily without clogging paper or creating dust clouds. For the finest finish on visible repairs, finish with 220-grit.

All-Purpose Putty Questions
Yes, our all-purpose putty is water-resistant once fully cured and suitable for exterior repairs. It withstands rain, humidity, and temperature fluctuations without cracking or separating from the substrate.
For maximum weather protection, prime and paint the repaired area within 24 hours of sanding. The topcoat seals the putty and prevents moisture intrusion at the repair edges.
Bondo all-purpose putty fills gaps up to 1/2 inch deep in one pass. For deeper repairs, apply in multiple layers no thicker than 1/2 inch each.
Allow each layer to reach firm consistency (approximately 30 minutes) before adding the next. Building in layers prevents the putty from sagging in deep voids and ensures complete curing throughout the repair.
Bondo all-purpose putty accepts stain but will not match natural wood grain patterns exactly. The cured putty absorbs stain at a different rate than wood, resulting in a noticeable color variation.
For repairs that require perfect stain matching, we recommend our dedicated wood filler formula, which is specifically designed to accept and hold wood stain like natural wood fibers.
Our all-purpose putty is a ready-to-use formula ideal for small to medium repairs on wood, metal, and masonry. It cures through solvent evaporation and requires no mixing or hardener.
Bondo body filler is a two-part epoxy system that requires mixing with hardener. It provides superior strength and heat resistance for automotive metal repairs but offers less convenience for quick household fixes.
You can apply primer as soon as the putty sands cleanly without gumming your sandpaper, typically 30-45 minutes after application at room temperature. For best results, prime within 24 hours of completing your repair.
Cooler temperatures and high humidity extend cure time, while warmer conditions accelerate it. Test a small area before committing to full priming—properly cured putty produces fine dust when sanded rather than sticky residue.
Do not thin our all-purpose putty with water or solvents, as this compromises bonding strength and causes excessive shrinkage during curing. If your putty has thickened from partial evaporation, replace it with a fresh container.
Store opened containers with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the putty surface before sealing the lid. This prevents air exposure and maintains proper consistency for up to 18 months.
Yes, our all-purpose formula contains no hazardous solvents and is safe for indoor use with normal room ventilation. It produces no toxic fumes during application or curing.
We recommend opening windows for air circulation during large repairs, not for safety but for comfort and faster curing. Wear nitrile gloves to keep hands clean—wet putty washes easily with soap and water.
