Formula & performance details

Formula & Surface Compatibility
We formulated Bondo all purpose putty with a polyester resin base that chemically bonds to porous and non-porous substrates. The compound’s thixotropic properties prevent sagging on vertical surfaces while maintaining workability during application.
For automotive applications, this putty adheres to bare steel, aluminum, and galvanized metal when surfaces are properly sanded to remove rust, paint, and contaminants. On wood projects, it fills knots, cracks, and gouges without the brittleness of traditional wood fillers. Masonry repairs benefit from the putty’s moisture resistance once fully cured, making it suitable for exterior concrete patching.

Application Technique & Cure Times
Apply Bondo all purpose putty in layers no thicker than 1/4 inch to ensure complete curing and prevent pinholing. Use a flexible spreader or body filler applicator, pressing firmly to eliminate air pockets and ensure surface contact. For deeper repairs, apply multiple thin layers rather than a single thick coat.
Cure time varies with temperature and hardener ratio. At 70°F with proper mixing, the putty reaches sandable hardness in 15-30 minutes. Cooler temperatures extend cure times—expect 45-60 minutes at 50°F. Avoid applying when surface temperature falls below 50°F, as insufficient cross-linking weakens the repair.
Surface Preparation Requirements
Proper adhesion depends on clean, profiled substrates. For metal surfaces, remove all rust with 80-grit sandpaper or a wire wheel, extending 2 inches beyond the repair area. Wipe with acetone or lacquer thinner to eliminate oils, waxes, and silicone contaminants that prevent bonding.
Wood repairs require different preparation. Sand the area to bare wood and remove any existing finish, stain, or sealer. Softwoods may need stabilization with a wood hardener before applying putty to prevent absorption issues. On masonry, wire-brush loose material and undercut edges slightly to create mechanical grip.

Questions About Bondo All Purpose Putty
This putty bonds to bare metal (steel, aluminum, galvanized), wood, fiberglass, masonry, and concrete. For best adhesion, sand surfaces to remove paint, rust, or sealers, then clean with acetone or lacquer thinner. It does not adhere well to plastics, vinyl, or glossy painted surfaces without proper mechanical abrasion and priming.
At 70°F with proper hardener ratio, the putty reaches sandable hardness in 15-30 minutes. Begin sanding when the surface resists thumb pressure but before full cure. Cooler temperatures extend cure time—allow 45-60 minutes at 50°F. Do not apply when surface temperature is below 50°F, as insufficient curing weakens the repair.
Apply in layers no thicker than 1/4 inch per coat. Thicker applications trap solvents, create excessive heat during cure, and cause pinholing or incomplete hardening. For deeper repairs, allow each 1/4-inch layer to cure fully before applying the next. Multiple thin layers produce stronger, more durable repairs than single thick applications.
Once sanded and primed, this putty accepts all common finishes including automotive lacquers, enamels, urethanes, polyurethanes, and water-based paints. Apply primer-surfacer within 24 hours after sanding to seal the surface and prevent moisture absorption. For wood projects, spot-prime the repair before staining to manage color differences.
Use 2-3% hardener by volume—approximately a golf ball–sized amount per softball-sized portion of putty. Too little hardener extends working time but weakens the cure and leaves the surface tacky. Excess hardener causes rapid curing, excessive heat, and potential cracking. Mix thoroughly until the color is uniform with no streaks, then apply within 3-5 minutes.
Reseal the container tightly after each use and store at 60-80°F. Keep away from heat sources above 100°F and avoid freezing temperatures, both of which degrade the resin. Shelf life is 2 years under proper storage. If a skin forms on the surface, remove it completely before mixing a new batch to prevent lumps and weak spots.
Our formula minimizes shrinkage when applied in proper 1/4-inch layers and mixed with correct hardener ratios. Excessive thickness, under-catalyzed mixtures, or application over contaminated surfaces can cause shrinkage or cracking. Proper surface prep, thin coats, and accurate mixing produce durable repairs that remain stable for years.
