Epoxy Formula & Bonding Performance

Plastic Metal™ uses a two-part epoxy resin system that chemically bonds to a wide range of substrates without mechanical fasteners or primer. Unlike traditional polyester fillers that only work on rigid surfaces, this bondo for plastic flexes with the repaired component, preventing stress cracks in bumpers, fender flares, and other dynamic parts.

The epoxy’s open cell structure allows sanding and feathering without pulling away from the substrate. Once cured, the repair accepts all automotive paints, including single-stage enamels, urethanes, and water-based coatings. For best results on oily plastics like polypropylene, wipe the surface with isopropyl alcohol before mixing and applying the putty.

Application Process & Working Time
Sizing & fit

Application Process & Working Time

Mixing the Epoxy

Cut equal lengths of both components from the stick and knead them together for 60 seconds until the color is uniform with no streaks. The putty remains workable for approximately 3 minutes at 70°F—cooler temperatures extend working time, while heat accelerates the cure.

Surface Preparation

Clean the repair area with soap and water, then roughen the surface with 80-grit sandpaper to promote mechanical adhesion. On smooth or glossy plastics, a light scuff is critical—the epoxy bonds best to textured surfaces. Apply the mixed putty within the 3-minute working window, pressing firmly to eliminate air pockets.

Styling

Compatible Materials & Use Cases

Plastic Metal™ adheres to thermoplastics (ABS, polycarbonate, PVC), thermosets (fiberglass, SMC, reinforced polyester), and metals (aluminum, steel, cast iron). This versatility makes it our go-to solution for collision repair shops working on modern vehicles with mixed-material construction.

Automotive applications include bumper cover cracks, broken fascia tabs, damaged fender flares, headlight bracket repairs, and interior trim reinforcement. Around the home, use it for PVC pipe repairs, lawn equipment housings, appliance panels, and outdoor furniture restoration. The flexible cure accommodates slight flex without cracking, unlike rigid polyester fillers.

Fixed my cracked bumper perfectly
I had a crack in my Honda's plastic bumper cover that kept getting worse. This bondo for plastic bonded like cement and flexed with the bumper instead of cracking out like other fillers I tried. Sanded smooth in minutes and took paint beautifully. Can't even tell where the repair was.

Stronger than the original plastic
Used this on a broken tab inside my door panel. The repair is now the strongest part of the assembly—I've removed and reinstalled the panel twice since the fix and the epoxy hasn't budged. Way better than trying to plastic weld it.

Great for PVC pipe emergency repair
Had a cracked PVC fitting in my sprinkler system. Mixed this epoxy putty, pressed it around the crack, and it sealed perfectly. Three months later through summer heat and water pressure, it's still holding strong. Keep a stick in my garage now.

Works fast but you need to move quickly
The 3-minute working time is real—this stuff starts setting up fast once mixed. If you have your surface prepped and ready, that's plenty of time. Just don't try to mix a huge batch at once. Small repairs are ideal for this product.

Saved my snowmobile cowling
Cracked the plastic cowling on my sled hitting a stump. This bondo for plastic bridged the crack and flexed with the part instead of shattering like rigid filler. Sanded it, painted it, and rode all season with zero issues. Impressive stuff.

Perfect for motorcycle fairing repairs
Repaired stress cracks in two ABS fairings on my sport bike. The flexible cure means the repairs don't crack when the fairing flexes from wind pressure or mounting. Took primer and paint flawlessly. This is now my go-to for all plastic bodywork.

Good to know

Common Questions About Bondo Plastic Metal™

Yes, Plastic Metal™ bonds mechanically to polyethylene and polypropylene surfaces after proper preparation. Clean the area thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove oils and contaminants, then roughen the surface with 80-grit sandpaper.

For maximum adhesion on these low-surface-energy plastics, apply a plastic adhesion promoter before the epoxy. The promoter chemically modifies the surface to enhance bonding. While the epoxy will hold without it through mechanical grip, the promoter ensures long-term durability on flexible bumper covers.

Apply Plastic Metal™ in layers no thicker than 1/4 inch per application. Thicker applications generate excessive heat during cure (exotherm), which can cause internal cracking, bubbling, or incomplete hardening.

For repairs deeper than 1/4 inch, build up in multiple layers, allowing each to cure fully before adding the next. This layering method also improves adhesion and reduces the risk of delamination. Each layer cures in 30 minutes at 70°F, so even multi-layer repairs can be completed in a few hours.

Cured Plastic Metal™ withstands continuous temperatures up to 180°F, making it suitable for most underhood applications away from direct heat sources. It works well for radiator tank repairs, coolant reservoir cracks, and battery tray fixes.

Do not use it on parts that contact exhaust manifolds, turbochargers, or other high-heat components exceeding 180°F. For those applications, consider a high-temperature epoxy specifically rated for 300°F+ environments. The standard formula excels at moderate-heat repairs where flexibility and impact resistance are priorities.

Yes, fully cured Plastic Metal™ can be drilled with standard twist bits and tapped for machine threads. Use sharp bits and moderate speed to avoid melting the epoxy from friction heat. Cutting oil or water lubrication helps maintain clean holes.

For load-bearing threads, reinforce the repair area with a larger epoxy buildup before drilling. The cured material is strong enough for mounting brackets, trim clips, and light mechanical fasteners. Avoid overtorquing screws—the flexible epoxy will strip more easily than rigid metal if excessive force is applied.

Clean the repair area with soap and water to remove dirt and road grime, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol to eliminate oils and contaminants. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding.

Roughen the bonding area with 80-grit sandpaper, creating a textured surface for mechanical adhesion. On smooth or glossy plastics, this scuffing step is critical—the epoxy grips best on a matte, scratched surface. For oily plastics like polypropylene, a second alcohol wipe after sanding ensures maximum cleanliness.

Yes, fully cured Plastic Metal™ is waterproof and resistant to fresh water, salt water, gasoline, motor oil, brake fluid, and coolant. This makes it ideal for repairs on fuel doors, underbody shields, marine applications, and outdoor equipment.

The epoxy does not absorb moisture or swell when submerged. For applications involving constant water exposure, ensure all edges are feathered and sealed with primer or paint to prevent moisture from migrating underneath the repair at the substrate interface.

Plastic Metal™ is a two-part epoxy designed specifically for plastic, metal, and composite substrates that flex or experience vibration. It bonds chemically to these materials and cures with flexibility, preventing stress cracks in dynamic components.

Regular Bondo body filler is a polyester resin that works best on rigid metal and fiberglass. It cures harder and sands faster but will crack if applied to flexible plastics. Use body filler for steel panels and door skins; use Plastic Metal™ for bumpers, fascias, trim, and any part that moves or flexes.
