Formula & Substrate Compatibility

Our bondo plastic filler uses a specialized polyester resin base engineered for thermal expansion matching. Unlike rigid fillers, the cured material flexes microscopically with plastic and composite substrates as temperatures change.

The formula creates chemical bonds with thermoplastics including ABS, polypropylene, PVC, and polycarbonate. It also adheres to fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP), sheet molding compound (SMC), and conventional metal surfaces. This versatility makes one product handle bumper covers, dashboard components, marine gel coat, and steel panel repairs.

Mixing & Application Process
Sizing & fit

Mixing & Application Process

Mix Bondo Plastic Metal using the included cream hardener at a ratio of golf ball-sized filler to 1-inch ribbon of hardener. Thorough mixing is critical—blend until the color is uniform with no streaks.

Your working time is 3-5 minutes at 70°F, so mix only the amount you can apply in one session. Cooler temperatures extend pot life while heat accelerates cure. Apply with a flexible plastic spreader, building thickness in layers if needed.

Repair Applications & Use Cases

Automotive technicians use bondo plastic most frequently for flexible bumper cover repairs where rigid fillers fail. The formula matches the flex characteristics of modern thermoplastic bumpers, preventing cracks from reappearing at repair sites.

Motorcycle fairing damage, kayak and boat hull repairs, ATV body panels, and snowmobile cowling all benefit from this flexible formulation. Household applications include repairing plastic lawn furniture, PVC components, and fiberglass tub and shower enclosures.

Fixed my cracked bumper perfectly
I used Bondo Plastic Metal on a split in my front bumper cover and it's been holding up great for six months now. The flexibility means it doesn't crack like the rigid filler I tried first. Sanded smooth and painted without any issues.

Great for motorcycle fairings
This stuff saved me $400 on replacement fairings for my sport bike. The repair flexes with the plastic and I can't even tell where the damage was after painting. Much better than epoxy putty I've used before.

Works on everything plastic
I keep a can in my shop for ATV repairs, lawn equipment, and household fixes. It bonds to every type of plastic I've tried and sands beautifully. The working time is just right for getting it spread before it kicks off.

Body shop quality at home
As a former auto tech, I can say this is the same formula we used professionally. My DIY bumper repair came out looking factory. The key is good surface prep and thorough mixing.

Easy to use and durable
Fixed cracks in my jet ski hull last season and they're still solid after a full summer of use. The product is straightforward to mix and apply. Only wish the container was a bit larger for big jobs.

Best plastic filler I've found
I restore classic cars and modern vehicles have so much plastic trim. This Bondo product handles it all without the brittleness of regular body filler. Excellent adhesion and it feathers out nicely at the edges.

Common Questions About Plastic Metal

Yes, our plastic filler bonds to polypropylene (PP) and other thermoplastics commonly used in automotive bumper covers. For best results, thoroughly clean the surface with wax and grease remover, then scuff with 80-grit sandpaper before application.

The flexible formula is specifically designed to move with polypropylene as it expands and contracts with temperature changes, preventing crack formation at repair sites.

Bondo Plastic Metal reaches full cure in 20-25 minutes at 70°F, at which point you can begin sanding. We recommend starting with 80-grit to level the repair, then progressing through finer grits to 320 before priming.

You can apply primer and paint immediately after final sanding—no waiting period is required. The cured filler accepts all automotive primers and topcoats without special sealers or additives.

Bondo Plastic Metal uses a flexible polyester resin formulation that moves with plastic and composite substrates, while our original body filler is rigid and designed for metal panels. Plastic Metal prevents cracking on flexible surfaces like bumper covers, fairings, and fiberglass.

Regular body filler works best on steel, aluminum, and other rigid metal surfaces where flexibility isn't needed. Choose the product based on your substrate material for optimal repair performance.

Yes, bondo plastic has good vertical cling when mixed properly and applied in appropriate thicknesses. For best results on vertical or overhead repairs, apply in thin layers rather than one heavy coat.

The 3-5 minute working time allows careful application before the material begins to set. If you're filling deep damage on a vertical surface, consider applying multiple thin layers rather than one thick application.

Once fully cured, Bondo Plastic Metal is completely waterproof and suitable for marine repairs including fiberglass hull damage, gel coat restoration, and boat component fixes. The material resists saltwater, freshwater, and typical marine chemicals.

For below-waterline applications, ensure thorough surface preparation and consider reinforcing large repairs with fiberglass cloth for maximum strength and water resistance.

Mix approximately 1 inch of cream hardener ribbon for every golf ball-sized amount of filler. This ratio provides optimal cure time and strength—too little hardener results in slow or incomplete curing, while too much causes excessive heat and brittleness.

Blend thoroughly until the color is completely uniform with no streaks of hardener visible. Inadequate mixing creates soft spots that won't cure properly and compromise repair strength.

Yes, our plastic filler creates strong bonds with ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) commonly found in automotive interior components, motorcycle parts, and household items. The flexible formula accommodates ABS's thermal expansion characteristics.

Clean and scuff the ABS surface before application, and consider V-grooving deep cracks to increase bonding area. The repair will be as strong as the surrounding material when properly applied and cured.
