Surface Compatibility & Preparation
Metal Surfaces
Premixed Bondo adheres exceptionally well to clean, bare metal. Before application, remove all rust, paint, and contaminants with 80-grit sandpaper or a wire wheel. Wipe the area with a clean cloth dampened with acetone or wax remover to eliminate any residual oils.
Fiberglass & Composite Materials
For fiberglass boat repairs or composite auto body panels, scuff the surface with 120-grit sandpaper to create mechanical adhesion. Our formula bonds securely to properly prepared fiberglass without requiring special primers. Marine applications benefit from the non-shrinking properties that prevent water intrusion.
Sanding & Finishing Process
Allow 30 to 45 minutes of cure time before sanding — the surface should feel firm to the touch but not completely hard. Start with 80-grit sandpaper to level high spots and shape contours, then progress through 120-grit and 220-grit for a smooth finish.
A sanding block or long board helps maintain flat, even surfaces on large panels. Avoid power sanders during initial shaping, as they can generate heat that softens the filler. Once you’ve achieved the desired shape, finish-sand with 320-grit paper before priming.

For flexible plastics like polypropylene bumper covers, we recommend using a specialized flexible filler instead. Premixed Bondo may crack on surfaces that bend or flex during normal use.

Premixed Bondo is designed for surface repairs on solid substrates, not structural rust hole repair. For holes and heavy corrosion damage, we recommend using our metal-reinforced two-part filler or fiberglass resin with cloth backing.
You can use premixed Bondo to finish and smooth repaired areas after the structural work is complete. Always treat rust with converter or remove it entirely before applying any filler product.
Our premixed Bondo formula is engineered to minimize shrinkage when applied in appropriate layer thicknesses. Thin to medium coats (up to 1/4 inch) cure with virtually no dimensional change.
